END OF AN ERA

I awakened with a jolt to the sound of heavy machinery on my very quiet suburban street. Peering out the window I saw a bulldozer removing not only the street signs but the quaint vintage green poles. The poles are older than I am and have been in place since the community I live in was built after World War II. It was a sad moment, but the highway department proclaimed the new ugly galvanized aluminum poles are "maintenance free". They are also without charm or character. Sometimes perceived improvements simply are not improvements at all. So much for "maintenance free".
